This Ithaka Journal publication analyzes the numerous benefits of biochar in poultry farming. Biochar’s ability to absorb moisture and organic material allow it to absorb harmful microbes that often thrive in crowded coops. Additionally, adding biochar to feed keeps chickens healthy by combatting ingested bacteria already in the chickens’ digestive system. Biochar can also be added to litter to reduce the spread of footpad disease and the amount of ammonia released by manure.
