Choose biochar made for soil
Start with clean, wood-based biochar sold as a soil conditioner. A fine or medium particle size blends well with indoor potting mixes and leaves room for roots. Avoid barbecue charcoal, ash, and fuel briquettes. Those materials are made for burning and may contain additives that do not belong in a plant container.
Prepare the biochar
Use biochar that has been blended with compost or exposed to a nutrient source before planting. This fills its porous structure with moisture, nutrients, and helpful microbes. Measure the potting mix

Pot or repot the plant
Choose a clean container with drainage holes. Add some prepared mix, set the plant at its previous depth, and fill around the roots. Press the mix lightly so it supports the plant without becoming compacted. Leave a little space below the rim so water can soak in without spilling.
Water and continue normal care
Water slowly until excess water drains from the container, then empty the saucer. Check the mix before watering again.
